The Quilted Landscape paintings, made between 2013 and 2016, were initially inspired by a formal interest in pattern, and in this case, the intricate and diverse patterns found in quilting. I have a great respect for this craft that both my mother and grandmother practiced. Bringing quilted imagery into the landscape provided endless opportunity to play with color relationships and the compositional element of inserting geometric shapes into an otherwise organic environment.
What emerged are these surrealist paintings that transform the landscape into something new. Through the interplay of man-made and natural elements I investigate our complex relationship with the landscape and how we domiciliate ourselves in wild, even hostile places.
