I had a great day today with just enough painting time to finish up this piece. Would you believe it, it’s the last day of my twenties today!
It was a great day that I finished up by attending my community’s book club (the author was present!) followed by two hours with my tennis club. The rest of the day was spent studying for my Spanish 101 exam tomorrow – yeeeah! I love it.
I am happy to say today is the last day of work on Quilted Lake. I’m pleased with the outcome and eager to move onto creating the paintings that have been accumulating inside me. If it weren’t for my tennis club meeting in an hour I’d start another painting right now! I’ve got some serves and volleys inside me too though, and they need to come out just as badly as the paintings.

Well, it’s been a long day. I spent a total of 9 hours painting and regardless of hot packs, stretching and ibuprofen I am in quite a bit of neck/head pain this evening. I know the painting is not quite done yet, although I don’t know exactly how far I am to the finish line… let’s just say I’m a lot closer.
Here is the progress picture I promised you, complete with an appearance from Dragon, who leapt up onto a chair to look out the window as I pressed the shutter.

Today I wanted to share with you my purchase of a new palette! This may not seem like a big deal, it IS just a 10 inch slab of unfinished wood… BUT this is only my second palette ever. EVER. Other than the big glass table-top I used in university. I was a bit reluctant to give up my trusty old palette, but my aversion to spending hours scraping it clean got the best of me and I decided to move on. heh.
So here is proof of new palette in front of new big canvas (don’t I look amused?):

I managed to finish this painting today and start work on a another piece in this series. You’ll see that one at a later date. For now, enjoy this kitty on the lawn/quilt painting, inspired by a photograph I took when I was 13.
I thought I’d offer up some insect illustrations for your Monday viewing. It’s so interesting how making artwork, no matter the style or purpose, usually fills my head and heart with inspiration and a million other works I want to make.
As the spring arrives and I’m spending more and more time in my backyard garden, walking around town and making summer travel plans, the ideas are filling my sketchbooks and I sincerely hope I can make the time to bring them to life in the near future.
I hope everyone is enjoying a few signs of spring if it isn’t fully warm where you live yet. Perhaps I can post some more photos of my recent adventures in New Mexico for those of you who are still getting snow…
My series took a bit of a turn when I produced this painting, “Quilted Sky”.
I’m exploring ways of incorporating quilting aesthetic into other scenes such as landscape, still life and portraiture. This is one of my first attempts to transfer the often geometric motifs from quilts into a landscape. It was very enjoyable to paint and spurred many more ideas… more paintings to follow in the coming weeks!
Don’t worry… there will probably be more cat paintings too 😉
Okay people. It’s been over a month since my last post and I sincerely do apologize. Life has been busy, life has been full, life has been beautiful.
Here are some excuses:
1) I moved to a new home and set up a new studio and am as pleased as pie in the new, well-lit space.
2) I adopted a kitten I found on the road dying in the hot desert sun. Her name is Dragon and she is very distracting with her cuteness. See?
Despite these big life events I have been painting and crafting up a storm. So sit tight and enjoy the more frequent posts for the rest of the summer!
Here is an oil painting I finished last month for my brother-in-law’s wedding. It depicts the countryside north of Bakewell, England where we all took a hike this past year. Monumental memories I tell ya.
